What are the risks?

Using unsafe toys -- or using safe toys in unsafe ways -- can pose any number of risks for children.

Small toys, balls or toy parts pose choking hazards to young children -- they should always be kept out of the reach of young children.
Check for and discard:
- Squeeze toys with loose or removable squeakers.
- Toy cars and trucks with loose or removable wheels or other small parts.
- The eyes, nose and other small items on stuffed/plush toys that could be pulled off.
Toys with long or stretchy cords are also hazards. The cords can easily become wrapped around a child's neck.
Playing too long and too often with loud toys can damage a child's hearing. Look for toys with volume control features so that the sound can be kept low or even turned off. Remember, if you have to yell to be heard above the sound of a toy, then the toy is too loud and should not be used.
Sharp edges or points on a toy can cut a child. Repair or discard any weak or damaged toys.
Toy packaging (such as plastic bags, plastic wrap, foam, and twist ties) can suffocate or choke a child. After buying a toy, promptly discard all packaging.
The handles on rattles and teethers should be large enough to not get stuck in an infant's throat.

Toymakers in Canada have to make sure their products follow the rules set out in the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act and associated Toys Regulation. Health Canada is the government department responsible for enforcing the rules. Health Canada's Product Safety Officers regularly check stores for unsafe toys.
