Changes to the registration of quizalofop-p-ethyl pesticides

All pesticides used in Canada must be registered under the Pest Control Products Act. Pesticides are re-evaluated to ensure that they continue to meet health and environmental requirements. Re-evaluation may result in the revocation of a product or product uses. Health Canada may also request changes to a product's label, including mitigation measures, use sites and application methods.

Quizalofop-p-ethyl is a herbicide used as a post-emergence treatment against grass weeds in various crops. Highlights of the re-evaluation decision regarding the active ingredient quizalofop-p-ethyl, published on February 23, 2024, are summarized below.

Risk reduction measures

• Update to the restricted-entry intervals (REI)
• Addition of pre-harvest intervals (PHI)
• Update of personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
• Minimum spray volume of 55 L/ha
• Updated buffer zones
• Precautionary statements regarding effluents, aquatic habitats and non-target species
• Recommendation to install a vegetative filter strip to reduce the risk of contamination from runoff
• Sugarbeets:
  • Minimal re-treatment interval of 14 days
  • Addition of a subsection "Sugarbeets" or addition of the statement: "For sale for use on sugarbeets in Canada" in the "Directions for use" section.
• Aerial application is prohibited for certain products
