All pesticides used in Canada must be registered under the Pest Control Products Act. Pesticides are re-evaluated to ensure that they continue to meet health and environmental requirements. Re-evaluation may result in the revocation of a product or product uses. Health Canada may also request changes to a product's label, including mitigation measures, use sites and application methods.
Potassium dimethyldithiocarbamate is a slimicide used in industrial fluids and as a material preservative. Highlights of the special review decision for the active ingredient potassium dimethyldithiocarbamate, published on February 26, 2024, are summarized below.

Cancelled uses
- Brine curing/brine solutions (leather industry) uses.
Other risk reduction measures
- Closed loading and transfer system (dry coupling) required
- Maximum application rate of 80 ppm for metal working fluid (cutting fluid) uses
- Update of required personal protective equipment
- For all products, addition of the statement: "Not for use in brine solution/brine curing solutions."
- For products used in paper or paperboard manufacturing, addition of the statement : "Do not use this product in the production of paper or paper coatings that will come in contact with food."
Users must follow the instructions on the updated labels.
Using a pesticide contrary to the label directions is a violation of the Pest Control Products Act.
