All pesticides used in Canada must be registered under the Pest Control Products Act. Pesticides are re-evaluated to ensure that they continue to meet health and environmental requirements. Re-evaluation may result in the revocation of a product or product uses. Health Canada may also request changes to a product's label, including mitigation measures, use sites and application methods.

Cyromazine is an insecticide used against various pests on several field and greenhouse crops. Highlights of the re-evaluation decision of the active ingredient cyromazine, published on December 16, 2021, are summarized below.

Cancelled uses

Stop use on the following field crops:

• Celery
• Leafy vegetables (crop-groups 4 and 5b)^{Footnote *}
• Ornamentals grown for cut flower production

Stop greenhouse use on ornamentals grown for cut flower production

Other risk reduction measures

• Additions to the required personal protective equipment (PPE), depending on the type of application and the quantity of product handled per day
• Closed cabin equipped with an adequate air filter preventing any contact between the occupant and the pesticides required for sowing seeds treated with cyromazine
• Updated restricted-entry intervals (REI) and pre-harvest intervals (PHI), according to the crop and the activity
• Reduction of the number of applications per crop cycle
• Added statement: "Do not apply directly to mushrooms. Make applications when there is no mushroom above the substrate."
• Aerial application prohibited
• Added warnings about risks for bees and pollinators, for fauna, flora and aquatic organisms, including the recommendation to install a vegetative filtering strip
• Updated buffer zones
• Added statements on the persistence of cyromazine (melamine) residues and their potential for leaching into groundwater

Users must follow the instructions on the updated labels.

Using a pesticide contrary with the label directions is a violation of the Pest Control Products Act.
