Foldaway beds are beds that can be folded up against a wall and stored inside a cabinet when not in use. They are also known as murphy beds, wall beds and hide-away beds.
Like other furniture, foldaway beds are generally safe if you use them properly. However, they can lead to injury or even death if not properly installed, secured and maintained.
Safety tips
Buy a bed with a locking feature or safety latch. Using them will prevent the bed from opening or closing accidentally.
Make sure the bed is installed safely:
- Hire a professional to install it if possible.
- If you install it yourself, carefully follow all of the manufacturer's instructions, particularly for:
- assembly
- installation
- maintenance
- Make sure it's properly anchored to wall studs or other structural components.
- This will prevent it from tipping over or collapsing.
Inspect the bed regularly:
- Look out for signs of wear and tear.
- Stop using the bed immediately if you notice any problems.
- Either replace it or hire a professional to repair it.
Use the bed safely:
- Open and close it carefully, as it may be heavy.
- Do not force it open or closed.
- Make sure to support the mattress.
- Get help if you're injured or have trouble moving heavy objects.
Keep toddlers and children safe:
- Supervise them at all times.
- Keep them away from the bed while it's being opened or closed.
- Make sure they don't jump or play on the bed.
When you're away from home
If you're travelling and know you'll use a foldaway bed at your destination, talk to your host about any safety concerns before you arrive.
If you arrive at your destination and discover a foldaway bed, inspect it thoroughly to make sure that it's anchored to the wall and in good condition. If the bed has a locking mechanism, use it.
Read all product labels and the instruction manual before using the bed.
Handle the bed with care. Do not use it if you see signs of damage or if the locking mechanism isn't working properly.
