About health care services provided in hospitals
Hospitals are an important part of the health care system. They are operated and managed by the provinces and territories.
Hospitals provide medically necessary in-patient and out-patient hospital services.
Medically necessary hospital services include:
- nursing services
- administration of drugs
- standard or public ward accommodation
- diagnostic procedures such as blood tests and X-rays
- use of operating rooms, case rooms and anesthetic facilities
Coverage for these services is provided by the provinces and territories. They must meet standards set by the Government of Canada in the Canada Health Act to receive federal funding for health care.
