Background

Health Canada's Food Directorate a food additive submission seeking approval for the use of polyglycerol esters of interesterified castor oil fatty acids as an emulsifying agent in unstandardized chocolate confectionery.

Polyglycerol esters of interesterified castor oil fatty acids is already permitted for use in Canada as an emulsifying agent in standardized chocolate products, unstandardized chocolate flavoured confectionery coatings, and edible vegetable oil-based pan coating emulsions for use on baking pans.

The results of Health Canada's evaluation of available scientific data support the safety of polyglycerol esters of interesterified castor oil fatty acids when used as requested by the petitioner. Therefore, Health Canada is enabling the requested use of this additive by modifying the List of Permitted Emulsifying, Gelling, Stabilizing or Thickening Agents, effective March 09, 2017.

The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for any inquiries or for those wishing to submit any new scientific information relevant to the safety of this food additive.
