Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Colouring Agents to Identify Synthetic Colours - Reference Number: NOM/ADM-0108
Background
Health Canada may identify the need to make minor changes to the Lists of Permitted Food Additives as a consequence of amendments to the Food and Drug Regulations (Regulations). These changes do not affect the permitted uses of these food additives.
As a consequence of regulatory amendments related to food colours (see Canada Gazette Part II, SOR/2016-305; December 14, 2016), Health Canada has modified the List of Permitted Colouring Agents by identifying synthetic colours using asterisks. To facilitate compliance with section B.06.061 of the Regulations, which relates to the lake of any water soluble synthetic food colour, Health Canada has also identified the permitted food colours that are water soluble synthetic colours.
The Department has thus updated the List of Permitted Colouring Agents, effective October 26, 2017.
The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for any inquiries or for those wishing to submit any new scientific information relevant to this modification.
