Dyne-NAO
In 2023, Health Canada received a submission from AceOne RS, Inc. on behalf of Dyne Bio Inc. to allow the sale of Dyne-NAO® in Canada as a food ingredient in meal replacement products at a maximum of 7 g per serving.
In order to determine whether Dyne-NAO® could be sold in Canada as food, the scientists at Health Canada conducted a scientific assessment that ensured that it is safe for consumption. Our scientists also assessed how Dyne-NAO® was developed, produced and whether it can be toxic or cause allergenic reactions.
Scientists with expertise in molecular biology, microbiology, toxicology, chemistry, and nutrition conducted a thorough analysis of the data and the protocols provided by the applicant to ensure the validity of the results.
Following this assessment, it was determined that the proposed use of Dyne NAO® did not pose a nutritional, microbiological, toxicological, or allergenic risk to consumers.
The consumption of products containing Dyne-NAO® may cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as gas, bloating, belching, flatulence, and laxation. While the likelihood of occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms increases with the amount consumed, sensitivity can vary between individuals. These symptoms are consistent with the effects of other incompletely absorbed carbohydrates and are not considered to be a serious health or safety concern. If gastrointestinal symptoms are experienced, they are expected to resolve once consumption of the food containing Dyne-NAO® has stopped, or a lower level is consumed.
Health Canada's assessment of Dyne NAO® was conducted according to the Guidelines for the Safety Assessment of Novel Foods. The approach taken by Health Canada in the safety assessment of novel foods is based upon scientific principles developed through expert international consultation over the last 20 years with agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
