ARCHIVED - Survey of Bisphenol A in Canned Powdered Infant Formula Products

Health Canada recently conducted a survey entitled Survey of Bisphenol A in Canned Powdered Infant Formula Products.

The results of this survey clearly indicate that exposure to BPA through the consumption of canned powdered infant formula poses no health or safety concerns.  BPA was not detected in any of the 38 canned powdered infant formula products surveyed.

BPA is used in the production of epoxy resins, which are used in the internal coating for food and beverage cans to protect the food from direct contact with metal.  These linings serve an important role as they prevent corrosion of the metal and contamination of food and beverages from dissolved metals.  The linings also play an important role in preserving the quality and safety of the food.

Health Canada recommends that parents follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely in preparing powdered infant formula.

The survey was conducted by Health Canada as part of its research and monitoring agenda to further investigate potential health effects of BPA and improve its understanding of Canadian exposure to this chemical through food sources.
