Summary

The Consumer Product Safety Program (CPSP) administers and enforces the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and its regulations.

The purpose of this Compliance Verification (CV) project was to verify industry's compliance of baby nests and baby loungers with the bassinet requirements of the Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations.

For this project, the CPSP carried out a market survey to determine the presence of establishments selling, importing, or manufacturing baby nests and baby loungers in Canada. Compliance of select baby nests and baby loungers (from that survey) was determined through an evaluation process where Health Canada inspectors visited establishments both online and in-person and sampled relevant products. Compliance with the mechanical requirements listed under the Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations was verified through testing at the Product Safety Laboratory. Establishments identified during the market survey were also sent a copy of the Industry guide for the classification or cribs, cradles and bassinets and sleep accessories.

Over the course of the 2025-2026 fiscal year, mechanical testing of 18 different products was carried out, where 13 out of the 18 samples were imported products. The testing resulted in 4 alerts, 3 recalls, 7 stop sales and 4 product listing removals by online marketplaces and e-commerce platforms. All the products tested demonstrated at least one non-compliance.
