Climate Change and Health Capacity Building Program funding opportunities
Overview
The Climate Change and Health Capacity Building Program supports the objectives of Canada's National Adaptation Strategy and the Government of Canada Adaptation Action Plan (GOCAAP). The expanded Climate Change and Health Capacity Building Program aims to advance knowledge, capacity and innovation in adapting to the health risks associated with climate change. The program is divided into 2 streams:
- Stream 1 HealthADAPT: Building climate-resilient and low-carbon health systems
- Stream 2 HeatADAPT: Protecting the health of people in Canada from extreme heat
A call for proposals is currently open for each stream.
Stream 1: HealthADAPT
Current status: CLOSED
Deadline for applications: September 19, 2024, at 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST).
Funding objective
- Assess climate-related health risks and issues facing people in Canada and implement adaptation measures to address them
- Support efforts to build climate-resilient and low-carbon health systems
Funding priorities
Health Canada is currently accepting funding applications related to the following priorities:
- Conducting assessments, plans and interventions
- This priority renews the first phase of HealthADAPT and focusses on conducting or updating a health and climate change vulnerability assessment and/or adaptation plan.
- Implementing and scaling
- Having done a health and climate change vulnerability assessment or adaptation plan, this priority focusses on:
- implementing specific interventions to reduce the health impacts of climate change, including adapting an existing intervention to new settings, populations or geographic locations
- assessing the effectiveness of an existing intervention
- implementing interventions that simultaneously protect health, reduce costs and improve sustainability
- Having done a health and climate change vulnerability assessment or adaptation plan, this priority focusses on:
- Health sector guidance, training and network building
- This priority focusses on creating and delivering training and education programs for the health sector. These programs will support planning and deployment of professional and human resource capacity for building climate resilient and low carbon health systems.
Applying for funding
Funds will be disbursed through multi-year funding agreements. This is a one-stage application process:
- Submit a completed proposal template, a detailed budget and workplan and a signed cover letter.

Stream 2: HeatADAPT

- Indoor heat
- This priority aims to:
- reduce the health impacts of indoor heat by devising practical heat interventions, particularly for at-risk groups
- This priority aims to:
- Prepare and adapt to extreme heat
- This priority aims to:
- enhance community, regional or provincial / territorial public health capacity to reduce health impacts from extreme heat, including developing and enhancing heat preparedness, alert and response actions
- better understand the health risks of extreme heat, including through syndromic surveillance
- This priority aims to:

Health Canada and Indigenous Services Canada's Climate Change and Health Adaptation program (CCHAP) are partnering to launch new funding for extreme heat and adaptation-related projects for First Nations and Inuit communities.
