Final Screening Assessment
In June 2013, the Final Screening Assessment on 1,2-dibromoethane was released and the related Notice was published in theCanada Gazette, Part I: Vol. 147, No. 23 - June 1, 2013 (PDF Version - 3,688 K).
The final screening assessment concluded that 1,2-dibromoethane does not meet the criteria in section 64 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999). Additionally, it is concluded that 1,2-dibromoethane meets criteria for persistence but not for bioaccumulation potential as set out in thePersistence and Bioaccumulation Regulations.
Draft Screening Assessment and Risk Management Scope
In December 2011, the Draft Screening Assessment Report on 1,2-dibromoethane (Ethylene Dibromide) was released and the related Notice was published in the Canada Gazette, Part I: Vol. 145 No. 51 December 17, 2011 (PDF Version - 5,372 K) for a 60-day public comment period.
In March 2012, a Risk Management Scope Document for 1,2-dibromoethane was released for a 60-day public comment period.
The public comments received have been considered and addressed within the final screening assessment report, and responses to the comments received are summarized in the Summary Table of Public Comments Received on the Draft Screening Assessment Report on 1,2-dibromoethane.
Background
Before the launch of the Chemicals Management Plan in 2006, a Screening Assessment Pilot Project was initiated to apply new tools and approaches to a subset of substances on the Domestic Substances List (DSL) such as 1,2-dibromoethane, that were anticipated to meet the ecological or human health categorization criteria. Subsequently, under the categorization exercise, 1,2-dibromoethane was found to meet both the ecological and human health criteria.
