What is it?

2-Ethoxyethanol acetate is used primarily as a solvent. It is also used in paints, coatings, and cleaning solutions for industrial applications.
Based on the most recent data available, 2-ethoxyethanol acetate is not manufactured in Canada, but is imported into Canada.

2-Ethoxyethanol acetate was identified as a potential concern for human health based on its classification by an international organization as a substance that may cause harm to the developing fetus and may also impair fertility, and based on what was believed to be a high potential for exposure to Canadians.

There were no reports of current uses in consumer products. As a result, exposure of the general population in Canada to 2-ethoxyethanol acetate is expected to be very low.

The Government of Canada conducted a science-based evaluation of 2-ethoxyethanol acetate, called a screening assessment.
The Government of Canada's final assessment concludes that exposure to 2-ethoxyethanol acetate is not considered to be harmful to human health.
Although Canadians' exposure is currently considered to be very low, the Government of Canada is taking action so that exposure remains low.
The Government of Canada will consider implementing a Significant New Activity or SNAc provision for 2-ethoxyethanol acetate. This would require that any proposed new uses of 2-ethoxyethanol acetate would be subject to further assessment before this new activity would be allowed.
The final screening assessment was published on March 7, 2009.

Because 2-ethoxyethanol acetate does not pose a risk to human health or the environment, Canadians do not need to take any specific actions to reduce their exposure.
