What is it?

Acid Green 40:1 is a green dye used in the textile industry.
Based on the most recent data available, Acid Green 40:1 is not in commerce in Canada.

Acid Green 40:1 was identified as a potential concern to the environment based on available information regarding possible persistence, accumulation and potential to cause harm to the environment.

The Government of Canada has conducted an evaluation of Acid Green 40:1 based on science, called a screening assessment.
The evaluation showed that Acid Green 40:1 can stay in the environment for a long time. It can build up in the bodies of animals or within the food chain, and small amounts of Acid Green 40:1 can harm animals or plants that live in water.
However, the Government of Canada has reviewed information that indicates Acid Green 40:1 is not currently in commerce in Canada in significant quantities.
As a result, it is unlikely that Acid Green 40:1 is entering the environment as a result of commercial manufacture or use in this country.
The Government of Canada has implemented a Significant New Activity or SNAc provision for Acid Green 40:1 since it has the potential to cause harm in the environment. This requires that any proposed new uses of Acid Green 40:1 must be reassessed prior to the substance being manufactured in or brought into Canada.
The final screening assessment report was published on January 31, 2009.
