Why Did the Government of Canada Assess It?

• The Government of Canada had a concern that Pigment Red 187 may have been "toxic" to the environment as defined under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999.
• Pigment Red 187 can remain in the environment for a long time, but it does not build up in animals or increase within the food chain. Small amounts of Pigment Red 187 are not likely to harm animals or plants that live in the water.
• Pigment Red 187 was assessed by Government of Canada scientists to help decide what further actions may be necessary to ensure that the health of Canadians and their environment are protected.

What Is the Government of Canada Doing?

• The Government of Canada has determined that Pigment Red 187 is not "toxic" as defined under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999.
• No further action will be taken on Pigment Red 187.
