Closed consultation: Advance requests and medical assistance in dying

This national consultation on advance requests and medical assistance in dying (MAID):

• discussed advance requests, using international and domestic research, studies and examples
• heard views on advance requests

Who was the focus of this consultation

• Patients
• Health care providers
• First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples
• Persons with lived experiences
• People residing in Canada

In addition to a questionnaire, this national conversation included:

• discussions with all provinces and territories
• virtual roundtables with a broad range of stakeholders, including Indigenous groups, persons with disabilities and people with lived personal experiences

Health Canada will publish a report on key findings in Fall 2025.

Why we consulted

On the complex topic of advance requests as they relate to MAID, it was important to hear a full range of perspectives.

This national conversation was another step to ensure that the framework for MAID in Canada:

• reflects the evolving needs of people in Canada
• protects those who may be vulnerable
• supports autonomy and freedom of choice
