COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination Fund

On this page

Overview

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to:

  • protect yourself from the serious outcomes of COVID-19
  • protect our health care system capacity
  • help build healthier communities

In summer of 2021, the Government of Canada collaborated with provinces and territories to develop a Canadian COVID-19 proof of vaccination. This proof of vaccination provides people vaccinated in Canada with a simple, consistent way to view their COVID-19 vaccination history.

The federal government committed to supporting provinces and territories through the COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination Fund. Money was set aside in the 2021 Economic and Fiscal Update. This $300 million fund:

  • recognizes that provinces and territories have incurred financial and operational costs to develop and maintain a proof of vaccination program
  • supports the federal, provincial and territorial collaboration behind the Canadian COVID-19 proof of vaccination

The investment will help provinces and territories maintain proof of vaccination for up to 3 additional years, beginning in April 2022.

The fund also helps maintain the strong collaboration between the Government of Canada and provincial and territorial governments moving forward. It also takes into account important considerations for Indigenous communities and organizations.

Ministerial letters

Public letters between the federal minister of health and each provincial and territorial counterpart have been exchanged. The letters outline:

  • each province and territory’s funding allocation
  • federal commitments to support a consistent approach to proof of vaccination across Canada
  • provincial and territorial commitments, including that Canadian COVID-19 proofs of vaccination remain available for up to 3 years from April 2022
  • areas of continued collaboration in proof of vaccination programming
