Deductions for handling your grain

Elevators licensed by the Canadian Grain Commission can charge you for various grain handling services, deducting these costs from your grain delivery payment:

  • Charges for elevator services
  • Third-party costs

Charges for elevator services

Primary, terminal and process elevator charges may be deducted for services. Under the Canada Grain Act, elevator operators must file, with the Canadian Grain Commission, a summary of current charges including:

  • Elevation
  • Removal of dockage
  • Storage
  • Cleaning as requested by the owner of the grain or screenings
  • Drying as requested by the owner of the grain or screenings
  • Blending
  • Other services as performed by the elevator company

Operators may apply charges that are the same or less than those filed.

Third-party costs

Licensed elevators are not required to file or post charges related to third-party costs.

Examples of third-party costs are:

  • Rail freight
  • Trucking
  • Marketing
  • Weighing
  • Inspection
  • Fumigation

Summaries of current elevator charges

Summaries are available:

  • In your local primary elevator
  • Under Elevator Charges for primary, terminal and process elevators

Check on deductions

You can:

  • Ask about all charges and inquire about other delivery options before delivering grain or entering into a contract
  • Compare charges being applied at elevators in your area
  • Contact the Canadian Grain Commission at 1-800-853-6705 or contact@grainscanada.gc.ca if you feel an elevator operator has deducted charges unfairly

The Canadian Grain Commission does not set or approve charges for services provided by licensed elevators. However, the Canadian Grain Commission will investigate your complaint if you feel a company has deducted charges unfairly.
