The samples we receive through the Harvest Sample Program help us make sure the Canadian grain grading system is working for everyone, from producers to processors.

In 2014, we saw that many samples of milling wheat were being downgraded due to mildew damage. We decided to study the issue.

Our study showed that an increased presence of mildew has a negligible impact on the quality of products made from Canadian wheat.

The mildew guidelines for western milling wheat classes now allow for an increased presence of mildew in the visual guides and standards.

Fewer deliveries will be downgraded due to mildew damage, so producers will be paid fairly for the real quality of their crop.
