Red Tape Reduction Office: about the Office

Regulations are vital for safeguarding the health, safety, and security of Canadians and the environment. They affect nearly every aspect of everyday life by providing protections that Canadians expect like safe food, clean air and secure borders.

However, over time, some regulatory requirements can pile up or become outdated. This can make it difficult for Canadians and Canadian businesses to do business. These regulatory burdens are often called “red tape” and can include:

  • outdated or unnecessary rules
  • duplication or overlap with provincial rules
  • inefficient or unpredictable regulatory administration or service delivery

Red Tape is increasingly seen as a barrier to investment and growth.

The Red Tape Reduction Office was established to address regulatory red tape by:

  • making the regulatory system more efficient
  • reducing barriers to innovation, productivity and economic growth
  • reducing regulatory costs for Canadians and businesses

Red Tape Review

The Government of Canada is initiating a Red Tape Review to support the accelerated removal of red tape from the federal regulatory system.
