Minister LeBlanc updates Advisory Committee on Canada–U.S. Economic Relations

Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs, Internal Trade and One Canadian Economy, and the Honourable Janice Charette, Canada’s Chief Trade Negotiator to the United States, and Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, Mark Wiseman, updated members of the Advisory Committee on Canada–U.S. Economic Relations on ongoing engagements between the two countries as trade discussions intensify ahead of the August 19 deadline.

They reiterated that Canada is engaging intensively with the United States to address outstanding trade issues to the mutual benefit of both countries, including securing relief from all existing sectoral tariffs and from the new Section 338 tariffs that the United States is planning to impose on August 19, as well as making progress toward a modernised CUSMA.

Committee members provided views on opportunities to advance Canadian interests as trade discussions continue.

In closing, Minister LeBlanc, Mme Charette, and Ambassador Wiseman, who participated in the meeting virtually from Washington, D.C., emphasized the importance of continued engagement with the Committee, Canadian businesses, industry, labour and other stakeholders as Canada navigates the current trade environment. They underscored that the Government of Canada will continue to work with partners across the country to protect Canada’s economic interests and support Canadian workers, farmers, businesses and families.
