Minister Joly to visit Côte d'Ivoire and South Africa

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will visit Côte d'Ivoire on August 19 to 20, followed by South Africa from August 21 to 22.
In Abdijan, Côte d'Ivoire, Minister Joly will meet with the Vice-President Tiémoko Meyliet Koné and Minister of Defense, Téné Birahima Ouattara to discuss shared priorities related to counterterrorism and to explore ways to reinforce regional security. She will also have a bilateral meeting with the Minister delegate for Foreign Affairs of Côte d'Ivoire, Ouattara Wautabouna, to address bilateral issues of mutual interest and reaffirm Canada's deep commitment to La Francophonie.
During her visit to Pretoria and Johannesburg, South Africa, Minister Joly will meet with the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, to discuss Canada and South Africa’s economic partnership, mutual environmental priorities, development cooperation and international peace and security. Minister Joly’s engagement in South Africa offers the opportunity to highlight our shared commitments to democracy, security and prosperity, and to pay tribute to the 30th anniversary of the end of apartheid in South Africa.

Bilateral relations between Canada and Côte d'Ivoire are close and cordial. The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1962 shortly after Côte d'Ivoire's independence in 1960. The countries are partners in la Francophonie and collaborate in a number of multilateral fora, such as the United Nations and the African Development Bank.

Canada and South Africa maintain a deep and broad relationship based on shared values of democracy, security and prosperity. Canada and South Africa are both members of a number of multilateral organizations, including the Commonwealth and the G20, and collaborate on important issues such as women’s empowerment, the environment and climate action, and regional security. Canada established diplomatic ties with South Africa in 1939 and has participated in regular annual Bilateral Consultations with the country since 2003.
