You may request that Equifax and TransUnion mail you a free copy of your credit report.

Here’s how to request it:

Credit bureaus update your credit score at least once per month. You may access your credit score online from Canada’s 2 main credit bureaus:

You may also request a non-electronic credit score from Equifax for free (for example, by phone or by mail). If you live in Quebec or Ontario, you may also request it from TransUnion. You’ll need to provide required identification documents.

Other companies may also offer your credit score for free. Some may ask you to sign up for a paid service to get your score.

Some Federally Regulated Financial Institutions may also provide free credit scores through their banking app.

Protect your information

Fraudsters may pretend to offer free credit reports or credit scores to steal your personal and financial information.

Before you give a company your personal or financial information to get your credit report or credit score:

  • research the company to make sure it’s legitimate
  • carefully read their terms of use and privacy policy
  • check how they’ll store and use your information
  • find out if they’ll sell your data to third parties

Some business may collect and sell your personal information to a third party. If they do, you might receive unexpected offers for products and services.

Always check that a website is secure before providing any of your personal information. A secure website will start with “https” instead of “http”.
