Water survey of Canada and provincial/territorial flood information
Floods can be one of the most damaging forms of natural disaster in the world. Being aware of the risks of a flood gives us time to prepare and potentially minimize the impacts.
Together, Environment Canada (EC), provinces and territories, provide crucial information to help forewarn Canadians of potential flooding dangers.
Staff at EC’s Water Survey of Canada (WSC) collect, interpret and disseminate standardized water resource data and information year-round, including the challenging winter and spring seasons. EC’s Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC) also provides critical weather forecasting and emergency preparedness support through our weather forecasting infrastructure.
Our water level, streamflow data collected in our national partnership program and MSC weather data are used by provincial and territorial governments to issue flood bulletins, advisories and warnings via flood forecasting centres, ministries responsible for water resources or the provincial/territorial emergency management organizations (EMO).
