Mature and/or undesirable trees are removed individually or in small groups over short intervals (cutting cycles) to develop an uneven-aged stand structure. Regeneration is natural. This system is particularly suited to the management of sugar maple.
Prescription:
Improve growing conditions for acceptable growing stock while developing an acceptable stand structure. Allow some group selection openings for yellow birch regeneration.
Target residual basal area: 18 m2/ha
