Effects of Shelterwood Harvesting on Songbirds

Forest songbirds are being monitored in shelterwood harvest compartment 34 and in a control.

Singing-male censuses are used to measure community structure, abundance and diversity. Counts are made of birds heard or seen within 50m of a fixed point during five-minute visit. There are 12 points per compartment, each censussed at least three times during breeding season.

Dominant Pre-Harvest Species: Ovenbird, Black-throated Green Warbler, Red-eyed Vireo. (Other common species: Hermit Thrush, Swainson's Thrush, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Cedar Waxwing).

Post-harvest censuses will be conducted for the next several years to document changes in songbird community composition over time as a result of harvesting.
