Workshop on emerging HRMS and LC-MS applications in environmental analysis and food safety
The 21st workshop concluded on October 8th, 2025, in Ottawa, Canada. The next workshop hosted by Environment and Climate Change Canada is scheduled for 2027.
Workshop overview
The main objective of the workshop is to evaluate practical aspects of the usefulness of high resolution-mass spectrometry (HRMS) and tandem mass spectrometric (MS/MS) techniques for screening and quantitation of organic contaminants in the environmental and food samples.
The following practical aspects and state of the art applications will be discussed:
- Advances in HRMS instrumentation and their applications in environmental and food analysis
- Non Target Analysis (NTA) and Bioinformatics applied to environmental and food samples
- Advanced Wastewater-Based Epidemiology (WBE) for public health
- Fate, transport, treatment and effects of emerging contaminants
- Challenges, new methods, and applications in environmental studies and food authenticity

Workshop history and background
This international workshop has taken place annually since 2005 on a rotating basis in Spain, Canada, or the USA.
The two-day workshop provides a forum to present and discuss recent scientific findings, exchange ideas, and to further investigate and troubleshoot challenges and needs related to advances in LC-HRMS and MS/MS applications in the field of environmental and food safety.
This workshop combines plenary and poster sessions. It is intended for scientists from academia, government agencies, industry, analytical instrument manufacturers, and students, all of whom are encouraged to present their work.
This meeting allows for networking and collaboration opportunities with other professionals. It also provides an unparalleled venue for younger scientists to meet and learn from the best in the field.
