Wood preservation facilities: pollution prevention planning notices

This notice (PDF) applied to the following facilities:
- Royer Trucking Ltd.
- Alberta Treated Wood Co.
- Natal Forest Products
- Aallcann Wood Supplies Inc.
- North American Wood Treating Corp.
Performance results
The objective of this notice was to reduce the release of toxic substances during wood preservation processes to the lowest achievable levels by the application of or by achieving equivalence with the best management practices set out in:
- Recommendations for the design and operation of wood preservation facilities, 2004 (PDF)
- Technical guidelines for the design and operation of wood preservation facilities, 2004 (PDF)
The notice specifically targeted the release of:
- inorganic arsenic compounds
- hexavalent chromium compounds
- polychlorinated dibenzodioxins
- polychlorinated dibenzofurans
- hexachlorobenzene
Although compliance with the P2 notice was difficult to achieve, 3 facilities eventually met their objectives. The other 2 facilities closed.
The 2007 Final Report, Summary of the Results from the Final Audits of the SOP-TRD Implementation Program for the Canadian Wood Preservation IndustryFootnote 1 , has shown that the wood preservation industry has largely adopted a responsible approach by following the technical recommendations documents for all preservatives.
