Combustion turbines: release guidelines overview
The guidelines for the reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions from natural gas-fuelled stationary combustion turbines have been in effect since November 18, 2017.
Objective
The release guidelines recommend nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission limits for new natural gas-fuelled stationary combustion turbines.
Target audience
The release guidelines apply to facilities that operate new natural gas-fuelled stationary combustion turbines with a power rating equal to or greater than 1 megawatt. A new combustion turbine is a combustion turbine whose commissioning date is on or after January 1, 2020. This does not include turbines that are:
- emergency combustion turbines
- used for research or field demonstration
- under repairs
- being tested during the commissioning period
- being tested during verification of repairs
Adopting the release guidelines
If the release guidelines apply to your facility, you are encouraged to:
- conduct an initial emission performance test within 6 months of commissioning a combustion turbine
- perform emissions performance tests to monitor the emissions of NOx from your combustion turbine as described in section 5.3 of the guidelines, using the standard methods described

There are currently no reporting requirements for the release guidelines.
Performance results to date
There are no performance results to date. Performance measurement will be performed 5 years after the publication of the final release guidelines.
