The code of practice to reduce emissions of PM2.5 from aluminium sector has been in effect since May 28, 2016.

Objective

This code of practice recommends best practices to control and minimize the emissions of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from facilities in the primary aluminium sector.

Target audience

The code of practice applies to primary aluminium facilities, specifically those involved in:

  • production of aluminium from alumina
  • prebaked anode production
  • green coke calcining
  • alumina production

Adopting the code of practice

If the code of practice applies to your facility, you are encouraged to:

  • implement best practices to reduce or limit emissions of PM2.5 to the environment
  • monitor PM2.5  emissions from your facility on a regular basis using standard quantification methods

Reporting

The code of practice does not have reporting deadlines; however, if the code of practice applies to your facility, you are also a signatory to the Environmental performance agreement for the aluminium and alumina sector. Please refer to the performance agreement for more information about reporting requirements.

Performance results to date

All facilities that are subject to the code of practice have submitted an action plan and have started implementing best practices in their facilities. Implementation of the best practices will be measured by 2025.
