Nature Advisory Committee

In June 2022, Environment and Climate Change Canada launched the Nature Advisory Committee (NAC). The NAC is an advisory body established to provide strategic advice, recommendations, and innovative solutions to help achieve Environment and Climate Change Canada’s nature mandate commitments and priorities, particularly the objective to conserve 30% of Canada’s land, to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030, and to achieve a full recovery of nature by 2050.

The NAC is made up of approximately 20 strategic thinking individuals who are recognized as leaders in conservation and who can provide scientific, socio-economic or technical knowledge, Traditional Knowledge, or specialized expertise in areas such as wildlife management (including migratory birds and species at risk), area-based conservation, ecosystem services, Indigenous conservation, sustainable natural resource industry practices, or nature-based climate solutions. The NAC’s membership is diverse and includes Indigenous peoples and individuals from environment non-governmental organizations, Indigenous organizations, industry, academia, and young professionals.

NAC members are selected through ministerial appointments and provide advice to the Minister and department of Environment and Climate Change Canada. Working collaboratively, the NAC is tasked with providing strategic advice on:

  • innovative solutions to issues related to cross-cutting nature conservation priorities (e.g., protected and conserved areas, biodiversity, wildlife, species at risk);
  •  co-benefits of Canada's social, economic, and conservation interests and/or objectives;
  • nature priorities, initiatives, policies, and program implementation; and
  • opportunities to strengthen partnerships on nature initiatives.
