Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area: Wetland trail guide

In 1887, Canada declared the Last Mountain Lake area as an important breeding grounds’ for the wild fowl. The 1,025 ha lake was then conserved under the Migratory Birds Convention Act 1917. In 1921, it became a Migratory Bird Sanctuary (MBS), which makes the site the first federally protected area in North America. A hundred years after its initial designation, in 1987 the lands surrounding the lake was established as a National Wildlife area (NWA), to consolidate the MBS. The NWA is 10,906 ha and hosts 300 species of birds during migration seasons. The wetland trail consist of an exploration into natural and human-made wetlands, which supports dozens of animal and plant species unique to the surrounding prairie. The guide provides with important information on the wetland trail, including a map, hiking tips and fauna/flora information. The hike is 2.5 km in length and usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete, so please wear sturdy shoes and bring water on a hot day.
