Comment on: Proposed new requirements for reporting triarylmethane dyes to the National Pollutant Release Inventory

Current status: Closed

This consultation ran from October 11, 2023, to December 15, 2023.

We consulted Canadians about National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) reporting requirements for five triarylmethane dyes. Industry uses triarylmethane dyes as colorants in medical devices, ink, toner, paints and coatings, and paper products.

Who was the focus of this consultation

We engaged with:

  • a multi-stakeholder work group including:
    • industry associations
    • environmental non-government organizations
    • Indigenous organizations
  • members of the public

Key questions for discussion

We proposed:

  • adding four individual substances under Part 1, Group B with reporting thresholds of 1,000 kilograms and 1% concentration
  • lowering the current reporting threshold of C.I. Basic Green 4 from 10 tonnes to 1,000 kilograms and rename it to Malachite Green

we sought ideas and input around the following topics:

  • should NPRI add the four triarylmethane dyes and lower the reporting threshold for Malachite Green?
