Traffic marking coatings – Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) concentration limits and seasonal use restriction

The Government of Canada has set limits on volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations contained in traffic marking coatings. Traffic marking coatings are paints and coatings used for marking surfaces such as streets, highways, parking lots, and airport runways.

The Volatile Organic Compound Concentration Limits for Architectural Coatings Regulations outline the requirements for manufacturers, importers, sellers, and users of traffic marking coatings. The regulations protect the health of Canadians and the environment by reducing the release of VOCs into the atmosphere, as they contribute to the formation of smog and degrade air quality.

Traffic marking coatings manufactured, imported or sold in Canada must not contain more than 450 g/L of VOCs. Additionally, traffic marking coatings are subject to a seasonal use restriction of 150 g/L of VOCs in effect from May 1 to October 15. There are no exceptions to the seasonal use restriction.

Product labelling requirements

Manufacturers and importers must ensure that containers of products with VOC concentrations greater than 150 g/L state on the label or lid “Not for application for the period beginning on May 1 and ending on Oct 15”. The date of manufacture or a code representing the date must also appear on the container’s label, lid or bottom. Other labelling requirements may apply.
