Sulphur in Diesel Fuel Regulations
The regulations set maximum limits for sulphur in diesel fuel for use in on-road, off-road, rail (locomotive), marine vessels, and stationary diesel engines. The current maximum sulphur limits for diesel fuel produced, imported and sold are available in the compliance promotion information package for the federal fuels regulations. The goals of the regulations are to reduce air pollutant emissions and to ensure that the level of sulphur in diesel fuel used in Canada will not impede the effective operation of advanced emission control technologies installed on vehicles and engines.

The Sulphur in Diesel Fuel Regulations include provisions that allow for alternative analysis methods to be used for reporting on Schedule 1. Each person who wishes to use an equivalent test method for reporting purposes must provide, to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), at least 60 days’ notice before using the method, a description of the method and evidence that it is equivalent to the reference method, referred to in section 4 of the Regulations. Equivalency of the desired method must be validated in accordance with ASTM D6708-16, and the method is to be used for reporting purposes only. It shall not be used to determine compliance with the sulphur limits referred to in section 3 of the Regulations.
A list of the currently approved alternative sampling or analysis methods can be obtained by contacting Environment and Climate Change Canada at: fuels-carburants@ec.gc.ca. Those proposing to use these methods for reporting under the Sulphur in Diesel Fuel Regulations may refer to that list as evidence of equivalency.
