Canada–Yukon Nature Agreement: summary
The Canada-Yukon Nature Agreement, signed by both parties on December 14, 2022, sets out target outcomes and early commitments in five key areas:
- Working toward conserving 25 percent of the landscape by 2025
- Creating a pathway to 30 percent by 2030 by supporting processes that enhance land use planning
- Supporting Indigenous leadership in conservation
- Protecting and recovering species at risk
- Sharing foundational knowledge and information
Some key outcomes of the Agreement will include:
- Protecting or conserving an additional 6 percent of lands in the Yukon by 2025
- Advancing efforts to protect species at risk by working closely with Indigenous peoples
- Managing species at risk in the Yukon such as northern mountain caribou and grizzly bear, in line with the outcomes identified in federal recovery strategies; and
- Increasing knowledge collection and data sharing.
Canada and the Yukon will work together to deliver on the priorities and commitments in this agreement. The Government of Canada will invest a total of $20.6 million to implement the Agreement and support nature protection and conservation. Both parties will work with Indigenous peoples in the Yukon to implement the Agreement in a way that recognizes the unique rights and responsibilities Indigenous peoples have with respect to the land.
