Environmental Damages Fund: available funds and application process
Available funds
Environmental Damages Fund (EDF) receives funds from fines, penalties, court orders, and voluntary payments following environmental infractions. Availability of funding at any given time varies according to the number of court awards and voluntary contributions directed to the EDF.
For this call for applications, funding is available to support projects that take place in Quebec.
Applicants must identify which available funding they are applying for in their application, including the location (province), funds available, Fund Use Requirement and the funding deadline.

- For projects related to the conservation and protection of fish or fish habitat, the improvement of water quality where fish live or for the restoration of fish habitat in the Moisie River watershed or Côte-Nord in the Province of Quebec. Applicants must request a minimum of $150,000 from ECCC in the application's budget to be eligible for funding.

- For research projects on the protection or conservation of Western Chorus Frog habitat and/or projects related to the conservation, restoration or enhancement of its habitat in the Province of Quebec. Applicants must request the full amount from ECCC in the application's budget to be eligible for funding.

Application process
Step 1: Confirm available funds and project eligibility
Log into Grants and Contributions Enterprise Management System (GCEMS) to review the funding opportunity and EDF Applicant Guide. The Guide contains in-depth eligibility criteria and tips to strengthen your application. Refer to the Guide to ensure all proposed project activities are eligible for funding and that the project satisfies the Fund Use Requirement(s).

If contacting ECCC about an application in GCEMS, please always reference the ID number associated with the application.
Step 2: Prepare your funding application using GCEMS
Visit the GCEMS application instructions page for technical assistance documents, tutorials, and support throughout your application preparation.
Step 3: Submit your application
Once you have submitted your application through GCEMS, the portal automatically generates an acknowledgment of receipt. If you do not receive an acknowledgment, it is important that you email sgesc-gcems@ec.gc.ca to confirm that your application was received.
Following the project review phase, a decision will be communicated to you by email.
