Scarborough dry cleaner fined for environmental offences
Toronto, Ontario - July 29, 2016 - Environment and Climate Change Canada
On July 11, 2016, Giuseppe Accardo, owner of Golden Touch Dry Cleaners, was fined $10,000 in the Ontario Court of Justice after pleading guilty to two counts of contravening the Tetrachloroethylene Regulations, made pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999.
The charges stem from an inspection of the business premises in May 2015, where Environment and Climate Change Canada enforcement officers determined that waste water and residue generated by the dry-cleaning machine had not been transported to a waste management facility, thus contravening the regulations.
In addition to the monetary penalty, which will be directed to the Environmental Damages Fund, Mr. Accardo was directed by the court to publish the facts relating to the commission of the offence and details of the punishment imposed in a dry-cleaning trade magazine.
