Migratory bird hunters fined and suspended
SRINGDALE, N.L. -- April 18, 2012 -- Todd Wiseman, age 42, and Freeman Ryan, age 62, both from Robert’s Arm, Newfoundland and Labrador, pleaded guilty on April 3rd in Provincial Court in Springdale, Newfoundland and Labrador to violations under the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994.
The two individuals were each fined $750 for possessing migratory birds, specifically Razorbills, without a permit. They are also prohibited for 14 months from applying for or possessing a license to hunt migratory birds, and from hunting migratory birds, or from being in the company of anyone hunting migratory birds.
In addition, two shotguns and five Razorbills were ordered forfeited to the Crown.
Razorbills are protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994. Environment Canada enforces federal wildlife legislation which protects plant and animal species throughout Canada. This is done in collaboration with other federal departments, provincial and territorial governments as well as international agencies and organizations.
