North American Ginseng: exporting from Canada

  • The export of wild American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) harvested in Canada is prohibited. Only cultivated ginseng may be authorized for export
  • A Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) export permit issued by the Canadian Wildlife Service is required for all exports of American ginseng
  • A CITES permit is only required for whole and sliced roots and parts of roots. No CITES export permit is required for live ginseng plants, ginseng seeds, or manufactured parts or derivatives such as powders, pills, extracts, tonics, teas, and confectionary
