What is the Low Carbon Economy Fund?
The Low Carbon Economy Fund (LCEF) supports projects that help:
- reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
- generate clean growth
- build resilient communities
- create good jobs for Canadians
These projects are critical as Canada continues to build a sustainable net-zero emissions economy by 2050.
The fund is an important part of Canada’s clean growth and climate action plans:
- Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change (the Framework) and
- 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan - Canada’s Next Steps for Clean Air and a Strong Economy
Canada’s 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan and Budget 2022 announced the enhanced and expanded Low Carbon Economy Fund by investing additional funding over seven years, starting in 2022-23.
LCEF currently has four streams:
- Low Carbon Economy Challenge
- supports the use of proven, low-carbon technologies to reduce GHG emissions
- Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund
- supports provinces and territories to help them deliver on commitments to reduce GHG emissions
- Indigenous Leadership Fund
- supports clean energy and energy efficiency projects led by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis governments, communities, and organizations
- Implementation Readiness Fund
- supports activities and investments that increase the readiness of GHG emissions reduction projects
