International actions to support adaptation

To help adapt to a changing climate, we demonstrate leadership and support other countries to plan, report on progress, and share experiences and lessons learned on adaptation at the national level.

Global Commission on Adaptation

Canada is a participant and supporter of the Global Commission on Adaptation. The Global Commission is an initiative aiming to catalyze a global movement to bring scale and speed to climate adaptation solutions. It has been convened by 20 countries, including Canada, with the goal of encouraging bold solutions to build resilience to climate-related threats.

Climate Change, Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

Canada is a signatory to the Paris Agreement, which took effect in 2016 and aims to strengthen the global response to climate change. This includes calling on countries to do more to adapt to changing conditions, working together to ensure action at home and abroad. The Paris Agreement also aims to make the poorest and most vulnerable countries and regions more resilient to climate change impacts.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations launched the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015. It includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Goal 13: Climate action relates to adaptation and climate resilience, and focuses on lessening the impacts of climate change on developing countries. The Federal Sustainable Development Strategy describes how our actions in Canada contribute to achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals.

Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (Sendai Framework) is an initiative of the United Nations. The Framework encourages cooperative efforts to better predict, prepare for and recover from natural disasters, including those related to climate change. We are working with stakeholders and partners in Canada and globally towards implementing the Sendai Framework.

The Sendai Framework, the Paris Climate Change Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals all complement each other.

United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity

Climate change has impacts on biodiversity and the ability of ecosystems to adapt to new conditions. Conserving and restoring ecosystems is essential to achieving the Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This is because ecosystems play a key role in reducing emissions and supporting resilience to climate change. They also provide a wide range of services that are essential for human well-being and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Find out more about Canada’s action to support the Convention on Biological Diversity.
