Summary of comments: code of practice to reduce fugitive emissions from iron, steel and illmenite sector

April 2016

On June 16th 2014, Environment and Climate Change Canada published on the CEPA Environmental Registry a proposed Code of practice which outlines best practices to reduce fugitive emissions of total particulate matter (TPM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the iron, steel and ilmenite sector. This publication was followed by a 60-day public comment period which ended on August 15th 2014.

Only a few comments were received on the proposed code. They have all been reviewed and considered in developing the final version of the code.

A few comments from industry stated that specific recommendations were not practicable for their facilities and should be modified. In response, Environment and Climate Change Canada notes that all recommendations “should be applied where and when appropriate and practicable based on the particular circumstances of each facility” as stated in section 3.0 of the code. The majority of the comments received were editorial.  These comments were incorporated, where appropriate, to provide greater clarity to the reader.
