Reference method for PCDDs and PCDFs in pulp and paper mill effluents: foreword

Foreword

The analytical methodology described in this report has been developed in support of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and is used to identify and quantify trace amounts of polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in pulp and paper mill effluents. The method detection limit depends on sample matrix characteristics and can be as low as 2 to 20 pg/L (parts per quadrillion) for PCDD and PCDF congeners.

The following procedures are described in detail: sample collection; extraction; cleanup; chromatographic separation; and identification and quantification of tetra- through octa- CDD/ CDF congeners, including 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-para-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzofuran (2,3,7,8-TCDF).

Application of this analytical methodology for compliance testing requires strict adherence to all critical elements in this method. Throughout this report, such critical elements are identified by bold type. Any deviation from the critical elements of this method may invalidate the test results and must be approved in writing by Environment Canada before testing. If deviations are made without prior approval, the validity of the lest results shall be determined by Environment Canada on a case-by-case basis.
