Calculation of the Corrected Vinyl Chloride Concentration in Process Vents from Vinyl Chloride and Polyvinyl Chloride Plants

C-1.1 Scope

Calculations are described to correct the measured vinyl chloride concentration in the collected samples to the conditions stated in the emission standards.

C-1.2 Corrected Vinyl Chloride Concentration

Concentrations of vinyl chloride shall be calculated on a dry, undiluted basis. The concentration of vinyl chloride as measured in a sample and reported in method A-1 as Cb must be corrected for water vapour and a final concentration reported as Cf. Cf is to be calculated using equation C-1-1.

  • Cf = corrected concentration of vinyl chloride, ppm
  • Cb = concentration of vinyl chloride in sample, ppm
  • Bwo = water vapour content of bag sample as calculated assuming the gas in the bag is saturated at the ambient conditions when sampled. If a condenser was used in the sampling train with ice, then the temperature shall be assumed to be 0°C.

C-1.3 Vinyl Chloride Concentration Corrected For Combustion Products

If incineration is used as a measure to control the vinyl chloride emissions, the stack gas composition is to be measured according to EPS 1-AP-74-1, Method C. Correct the vinyl chloride concentration to 10% oxygen using equation C-1-2.

  • Cf = concentration of vinyl chloride in sample as obtained from equation C-1-1, ppm
  • 20.9 = percentage of oxygen in normal air
  • 10.9 = percentage of oxygen in normal air, less the 10 percent to which the correction is being made
  • % O2 = percentage of oxygen in vent gases
