Air pollution from diesel powered machines

Off-road diesel engines are mainly used by the agricultural, construction, forestry and mining sectors. In 2000, off-road diesel engines produced emissions of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds approximately equivalent to the production from 480,000 heavy-duty diesel trucks and buses.

The Off-Road Compression-Ignition Engine Emission Regulations (full regulation) introduce emission standards for diesel engines used in off-road applications.  These standards will reduce, by as much as 69%, the maximum allowable limits for pollutants that contribute to smog.

The Regulations come into force on January 1, 2006 and apply to 2006 and later model year engines.
