Addressing air pollution through science and research

Our science and research helps to protect and improve Canada’s air quality.  We provide decision-makers and the public with:

  • scientific information, analysis and expertise on air pollutants, their fate and behaviour and impacts
  • knowledge about the current conditions and predicted state of air quality
  • supporting policy analysis, development of regulatory and non-regulatory instruments, addressing reporting requirements, supporting enhanced service delivery and meeting international obligations

How do we apply science and research to air quality issues?

Air quality measurements

Air quality measurement programs are essential for increasing our understanding of the atmosphere’s chemical and physical composition and any changes. They also help explain the impact of human activities on the environment and contribution of natural sources. Accurately identifying different air pollution sources - one of our many research activities - helps to develop effective control measures and mitigation activities to improve the quality of the air Canadians breathe.

Measuring and researching mobile source emissions

We carry out measurements and research of emissions from mobile sources and evaluate relevant control measures.  Mobile sources include a wide range of vehicles and engines, from lawnmowers to motorcycles to cars and trucks. In addition, we analyze the emissions impact of various fuels used by mobile sources and conduct performance testing on hybrid and electric vehicles.

Developing new and improved scientific methods

Our air quality science and research also focuses on the development, improvement, and validation of sampling and analytical tools, methods and techniques.

Air quality processes research

In order to better understand air pollution and its impacts, our scientists conduct research on the physical and chemical processes taking place within the atmosphere and their impacts.

Air quality modelling

Our scientists develop computer-based air quality models to predict the impact of current conditions and proposed actions on air quality.
