Bilateral trade and environmental protection

The Government of Canada is pursuing an ambitious bilateral and regional trade and investment agenda. Environment Canada participates in bilateral and regional trade and investment negotiations to ensure that economic growth, protection and conservation of the environment are mutually supportive. To this end, both Canada and its trading partners commit to maintaining high levels of environmental protection as we engage in liberalized trade and investment. Obligations are set out to foster good environmental governance, mandate the effective enforcement of environmental laws and regulations, and ensure that countries do not relax their environmental laws to attract trade or investment.

As well, Environment Canada contributes to the activities relating to the trade and environment nexus in multilateral fora such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
