Civil Service Insurance

Civil Service Insurance was a system of life insurance that the Government of Canada offered its permanent employees between 1893 and 1954. This was through the Civil Service Insurance Act .

Under the program, members could purchase from $1,000 to $10,000 of life insurance protection.

Members included:

• the federal civil service
• the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and
• the Canadian Armed Forces

During those years, the insurance policy was optional.

The Government stopped offering new Civil Service Insurance policies in 1954 when it announced the obligatory Supplementary Death Benefit.

You can no longer buy Civil Service Insurance policies. Though, some policies still exist as they were purchased before the program ended.

The Civil Service Insurance program takes care of the remaining policies.
